According to the latest research, if all the oil and oil filters in the United States were recycled annually, then there would be enough oil to fill 16 Olympic-size stadiums. At Ace Auto Parts we believe that recycling oil is the responsible choice, plus it is relatively simple to do! Below is a short guide on how best handle and recycle the oil used in your car.

Why Does Oil Need to be Changed?

The purpose of oil in the vehicle is to reduce abrasion between metal parts that are in contact with one another when performing a certain function. Over time, the oil loses its viscosity (the ability to stay thick enough to withstand metal friction) and needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the metal components will wear out faster than the oil. The oil in your car should be changed frequently to keep the parts operating at peak performance.

What Can Be Recycled?

The simplest answer to that question is any part of the vehicle associated with oil. Some examples may include:

●        Oil

●        Pan

●        Filter

●        Pump

●        Strainer

●        Pipe

Any metal or plastic part associated with the engine oil system can be replaced and recycled. You can bring any part of your oil engine system to your nearest auto service station, oil change facility, or household waste recycling facility, and they will recycle it for you. You can also bring waste oil for disposal to us at Ace Auto Parts. Be sure to call ahead to confirm the facility’s disposal capacity and recycling availability.

Proper Containment and Delivery of the Oil

When you bring in your motor oil, it is important to keep a few things in mind. First, you need to deliver the oil in a properly sealed container. The container should be clean before you put the oil in it. For instance, if you use a milk jug, then thoroughly rinse it out and let it dry before pouring the oil inside it.

Used motor oil cannot be recycled if it is mixed with other liquids, and including water! Make sure to tighten the lid on the container before transporting the oil to avoid spills. Filters and other oil-related parts can be cleaned off and brought in as is, however, you’ll need to drain the filter before recycling it. You can use a screwdriver to puncture the surface and let the oil run out into a container.
